AS 1684.2:2021 Figure 6.22 — Verandah beam arrangement showing roof load width (RLW), rafter/truss spacing and beam span. RLW = half the sum of the roof joist/rafter spans supported by the beam on each side.
Inputs
Wind Classification
Wind classification of the site per AS 4055 or AS 1684.2 Section 1. Verandah beam spans vary significantly between wind classes.
Timber Grade
MGP grades (T51) are seasoned machine-graded pine softwood. F-grades (T51A) are visually graded — select S for seasoned, U for unseasoned.
Roof Load Width (RLW)
RLW = half the sum of the spans of the rafters or trusses supported on each side of the verandah beam. Select the column equal to or just exceeding your actual RLW.
Rafter / Truss Spacing
Centre-to-centre spacing of the rafters or trusses framing into the verandah beam.
Roof & Ceiling Mass
Combined roof + ceiling mass in kg/m² of roof plan area. Select the row equal to or just exceeding your actual mass. Typical values: sheet metal roof 10–20, tiles 40–60, heavy tiled ceilings 90.

Tables 51 & 51A Notes
Spans are maximum single spans for verandah beams supporting roof loads only.
RLW (Roof Load Width) = half the sum of the spans of the rafters or trusses on each side of the beam.
Roof & ceiling mass includes the combined mass of the roof covering, battens, insulation and ceiling lining.
Minimum bearing length = 50 mm at end supports.
For continuous span verandah beams refer to Table 52.
MGP grades use Table 51 (AS 1684.2 Supplement 4). F-grades use Table 51A (Supplement 7).
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.22.
