FLW = width of floor area supported by the bearer (this table: 1200 mm).
RLW = width of roof carried by the bearer, from centreline to ridge or next support. Refer AS 1684.2 Cl. 2.6.4.

Parameters

Wind Classification
Per AS 4055 or AS 1170.2. Sydney suburban = typically N2. Exposed coastal or elevated = N3. Very exposed = N4.
Roof Type
Sheet roof: max total mass 40 kg/m² (roof + framing + ceiling). Tile roof: max 90 kg/m².
Span Condition
Single span: bearer supported at two points only. Continuous span: bearer runs over 3 or more supports.
Roof Load Width
Select the RLW column that equals or exceeds your actual roof load width. RLW = half the sum of adjacent rafter/truss spans at the supported wall.
Timber Grade
Select the stress grade of the timber to be used. MGP grades are machine graded pine (seasoned softwood). F-grades are visually graded. F14 WA is Western Australian seasoned hardwood.

Table Notes — AS 1684.2 Table 3

  1. Spans based on max sheet roof + framing + ceiling 40 kg/m², tile 90 kg/m², flooring 40 kg/m². Refer Appendix B.
  2. Cantilevers shall not exceed 50% of actual backspan.
  3. Minimum bearing = 50 mm at end supports; 100 mm at internal supports for continuous members.
  4. Multiple members shall be nailed together per Cl. 2.3.
  5. For design parameters refer to Figure 4.6 of AS 1684.2.
  6. Loadbearing walls at right angles to bearer within span: refer Cl. 4.3.1.5.
  7. Bearers supporting roof point loads: refer Cl. 4.3.1.6.
